The Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is set to return for a third term by winning 240 seats across the country. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) suffered a major setback from getting a full majority of 272 Lok Sabha seats. The BJP is set to depend on the alliance partners like TDP and JD(U) to make a government.
BJP’s narrow win
The BJP has got 240 seats in the LS’ elections and a meeting is organized to form the new government. The Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) has promised to show complete support to the NDA to form a government.
TDP, JD(U), Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Chirag Paswan-led LJP (Ram Vilas) have won 16, 12, seven and five seats respectively and will play a crucial role in government formation.

Some reports suggested that the INDI Alliance has also proposed Nitish Kumar from JDU to join them to form a government. The JDU seats have become very important because they hold 12 seats in Bihar which can now, when no party has a clear majority, make or break a government.
The BJP has suffered major setbacks in UP and some other BJP hotspots with many major candidates losing their seats which was completely unexpected. Smriti Irani, whose win was certain, also lost in Amethi against Kishori Lal from Congress with a margin of 1,67,196 votes. In Hyderabad, BJP’s star first-time campaigner Madhavi Latha Kompella also lost against Asaduddin Owaisi from AIMIM by a margin of 3,38,087 votes.
From Lucknow, which has historically been a BJP seat since 1991, Raj Nath Singh won by a close margin of 1,35,159 votes. PM Narendra Modi also got a setback in his constituency of Varanasi as he only won by a margin of approx. 1.50,000 votes compared to 5,00,000 approx. votes in 2019.
Narendra Modi reaches BJP HQ
Addressing party workers at the BJP office in Delhi, the PM began his speech with a salutation to Lord Jagannath the ruling deity of Odisha, where the BJP swept to power in the state polls and won 19 of the 21 Lok Sabha. He said the verdict shows that the people have reposed their faith in the BJP and the NDA. The BJP won 240 seats, and the alliance managed to win 293, comfortably ahead of the magic mark of 273.

After the second term, the NDA government’s record has become a guarantee of development, Modi said. “In 2024, with this guarantee, we went to every corner of the country to seek people’s blessings. Today, I bow down with humility to the blessings that NDA has received for the third time,” he added.
The PMs dubbed the verdict as “victory of the world’s largest democracy…of unwavering loyalty to the Constitution of India. This is the victory of the promise of a developed India and the victory of the mantra of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas.”
Modi thanked the NDA partners, TDP leader Chandrababu Naidu, who led the alliance to victory in the Andhra Pradesh state polls, and JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar, whose party won 12 of the 16 seats it contested in Bihar. The NDA, Modi asserted, is committed to ensuring empowerment for all.
Modi made it a point to thank women, and voters, for lending support to the party and described the elections as an emotional moment for him since it was the first electoral test he faced after his mother’s death in 2022.
