Tim Cook in Vietnam: Expanding Amid iPhone Sales Drop
CEO Tim Cook landed in Hanoi, Vietnam, on Monday as Apple seeks to expand its market presence.
During the two-day visit, Cook will engage with Apple users, developers, and content creators, according to local media reports. On Monday, Cook shared images on X from Hanoi, where he met with musicians and enjoyed an egg coffee.
This visit occurs amidst a challenging period for the tech giant, with recent figures from the International Data Corporation (IDC) indicating a 10% year-on-year decline in global iPhone shipments during the first quarter of 2024.
Thanks to the very talented VietMax for showing me how iPhone and iPad fit into his dance and street art workflows, and to rapper Suboi for sharing her newest song in Spatial Audio! It was incredible to see the energetic Vietnamese hip-hop culture! pic.twitter.com/OrckdJSZV3

In the competitive landscape of high-end smartphones, Apple faces significant challenges, particularly in crucial markets like China. Despite this, Apple has quietly established itself as Vietnam’s third-largest smartphone vendor by shipments, as per IDC, trailing behind Oppo and Samsung, both Chinese electronics giants. Vietnam has emerged as a pivotal location for Apple’s manufacturing operations, reflecting its strategy to diversify production beyond China.
Diversifying Manufacturing: Apple’s Shift from China to Vietnam
Apple’s overreliance on China became apparent in 2022 when the country’s stringent Covid-19 containment measures and labor disputes at Foxconn’s primary iPhone factory disrupted production. Foxconn serves as Apple’s primary assembler for iPhones.
In a strategic move reported by Nikkei in December, Apple began shifting some of its key iPad engineering resources to Vietnam. The country now plays a significant role in the development and manufacturing of Apple’s MacBook, iPad, and Apple Watch, marking a strategic expansion of Apple’s manufacturing footprint beyond China.
“Vietnam holds significance for Apple not only due to its growing fan base but also as the industry diversifies its manufacturing beyond China,” explained Bryan Ma, IDC’s Vice President of Client Devices Research, in an interview with CNBC.
Apple’s Reach Beyond China to Vietnam and India
This diversification strategy encompasses key locations like Vietnam, where Samsung has maintained a presence in the northern region for an extended period.
Ma highlighted Apple’s efforts to diversify its manufacturing, extending beyond iPhones to include devices like notebooks. Contract manufacturers such as Quanta and Foxconn have already been investing in this initiative.
India has also emerged as a crucial manufacturing hub for iPhones. According to Bloomberg, Apple now produces one in seven iPhones in India. The company began assembling its latest iPhone line in India in 2022, starting with the iPhone 14 series. Additionally, India represents a significant consumer market for Apple.
Tim Cook’s visit to Vietnam coincides with increasing scrutiny on Apple’s stance regarding human rights issues. Recently, 61 environmental and human rights groups urged Apple to take a stand against Vietnam’s detention of climate activists.
