Every year World Liver Day is celebrated on 19 April universally. The theme designated for World Liver Day 2024 revolves around “Keep your liver healthy and disease-free.” This year’s emphasis underscores the importance of routine health check-ups to safeguard against liver-related ailments.

The focus of the day is on raising awareness about liver-related conditions and diseases. The liver plays a vital role in functions such as immunity, digestion, and metabolism. Any ailment affecting the liver not only impacts the digestive system but also affects other organs like the kidneys, lungs, heart, and brain. Accumulation of excessive fat can also have adverse effects on liver health. Common symptoms of liver disease include decreased appetite, abdominal discomfort, jaundice, and weight loss. World Liver Day aims to encourage everyone to adopt healthier lifestyles.

The rising fatalities attributed to liver diseases each year are often attributed to a lack of awareness and preventive measures. World Liver Day endeavors to motivate individuals to embrace healthier lifestyles, consuming fewer calories to support liver function and manage liver-related ailments.

Ensuring an adequate amount of sleep, cultivating mindfulness to reduce stress, adopting a nutritious diet, engaging in regular exercise, and abstaining from alcohol and tobacco are proactive steps we can take to ensure the health of our liver.

History of this day

worldWorld Liver Day was established by the World Health Organization (WHO) with the aim of raising awareness about liver diseases and promoting investment in liver disease research. Its official recognition began on April 19, 2012, and it has since gained widespread recognition.

In 2010, the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) initiated the inaugural World Liver Day, marking the anniversary of its founding in 1966. Since then, April 19 has been observed annually as World Liver Day.
