Kohli’s Discontent: Umpire’s Decision and Hawk-Eye Analysis
On Monday, star cricketer Virat Kohli faced disciplinary action, being fined half of his match fees due to displaying dissent towards the umpire’s decision during the IPL match between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Kohli’s frustration stemmed from being dismissed after he was caught off a delivery by Harshit Rana, which was deemed a waist-height full-toss, during RCB’s narrow one-run defeat to KKR at Eden Gardens on Sunday.
The Hawk-Eye system, utilized for measuring no-balls based on height, was brought into action. The delivery in question, appearing to dip as it approached the batter, was determined to have been just above waist-height when contact was made with the ball.
The prominent batsman, who had scored 18 runs off seven deliveries, was positioned just beyond the crease at that critical juncture. TV umpire Michael Gough conducted a meticulous examination of the delivery’s height, employing the Hawk-Eye tracking system, revealing that had Kohli been standing upright at the crease, the ball would have passed at a height of 0.92 meters above his waistline.
Kohli’s Code Breach: Disciplinary Action and Consequences
Departing the field visibly agitated, Kohli engaged in an animated exchange with the on-field umpire before venting his frustration by forcefully knocking over a waste bin near the away team’s dressing room. An official statement from the IPL detailed the disciplinary action taken against Kohli, citing a breach of the IPL Code of Conduct during Match 36 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 clash against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on April 21, 2024.
Kohli’s actions resulted in the classification of a Level 1 offence under Article 2.8 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct. Upon acknowledgment of the transgression, Kohli accepted the sanction imposed by the Match Referee.
The statement reiterated that for Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the decision of the Match Referee stands as final and binding. Defined within Article 2.8 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, a Level 1 offence pertains to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision”, encapsulating actions perceived as challenging or disputing the umpire’s rulings.
