IndiGo Airlines is being investigated by the Health Ministry’s Food Safety and Standards Authority (FSSAI) on Wednesday, following a complaint filed by a Delhi-based dietician who discovered a worm in a sandwich served on a trip from Delhi to Mumbai on December 29. After receiving the complaint, the airline apologized and a video was published as proof on social media. IndiGo also stated that an extensive inquiry into the incident is ongoing.
The unexpected event occurred on aircraft 6E 6107. Kushboo Gupta, a professional dietitian on board raised the alert and posted her awful experience on Instagram.
FSSAI’s Reaction
Following the incident, the FSSAI acted quickly, issuing a show-cause notice to IndiGo on January 2, 2023. According to the show cause notice, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) asked the airline on January 2 to show cause why its license should not be considered for suspension or cancellation and action be initiated under the Food Safety and Standards (FSS) Act for serving unsafe food to a passenger on the flight. The airline received seven days to reply to the warning.
Indigo’s Reply
IndiGo confirmed receipt of the show cause notice and claimed that it will reply according to system. The airline pointed out its commitment to food safety and stated that the incident is being thoroughly investigated.
Passenger’s Action
Kushboo threatened to file an official complaint against the airlines in a post on Instagram. On her Instagram post, Kushboo warned the airlines of an official complaint. “As a Public Health professional, I want to know despite knowing the quality of the Sandwich was not good and informing the Flight attendant prior, she continued to serve sandwiches to other passengers. There were kids, the elderly and other passengers. What if anyone catches an infection,” the furious traveler wrote.
“I brought this issue under consideration to create awareness. I don’t need any compensation or refund. Just one assurance that Passenger Health & Safety should be your Top most Priority,” she further noted.
Importance of Food Safety
The FSSAI’s quick response in issuing a show cause notice to IndiGo emphasises the importance of food safety in the aviation business. Passengers expect and deserve safe and hygienic meals on flights. To protect the safety of its passengers, airlines must comply to rigorous food safety requirements. IndiGo’s answer to the show cause notice will be widely watched, as it would establish a precedent for food safety rules in the Indian airline sector.
