On March 18, Tamilisai Soundararajan resigned as the Governor of Telangana and Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry. She has six months remaining in Telangana and two more in Puducherry.
Her resignation was announced as PM Modi was addressing a rally in Jagtial. According to sources, 62-year-old Tamilisai, who led the BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit before becoming Telangana’s first woman governor in September 2019, was given the go-ahead to file her papers and enter the poll fray via the PM himself and who has been residing in Raj Bhavan since Sunday after addressing a rally of the public in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.
The BJP was considering forming partnerships in Tamil Nadu, and the decision was reached after consulting with the Prime Minister, according to a source. According to sources, party members in Tamil Nadu believe her return to electoral politics is critical in constituencies such as Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, and South Chennai.
Tamilisai’s statement
After arriving at Chennai International Airport in the evening, Tamilisai told reporters that she had willingly resigned to work in public service. “The Telangana people are like my brothers and sisters. I will never forget my interactions with Telangana residents, and I appreciate everyone. I’m back to plain and honest politics. “I will inform the media about my future plans once the President accepts my resignation letter,” she stated.
Tamilisai stated that neither Modi nor Union Home Minister Amit Shah limited her when she indicated a desire in returning to politics. She expressed appreciation to the people of Telangana and Puducherry, saying they would continue to support her because she had given up a privileged life to serve the public.
Sources say Tamilisai’s resignation was on the cards when goverment removed her main secretary Surendra Mohan a few days ago and replaced him with senior IAS official Burra Venkatesham. The election rules may prevent the state government from holding an official goodbye.
