Anita Goyal, the wife of Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal, passed away in the early hours of May 16 after battling cancer. Naresh Goyal was present by her side during her final moments. The funeral is scheduled to take place later in the day, as reported by India Today.
Earlier in May, Naresh Goyal was granted bail by the Bombay High Court for two months on humanitarian grounds, following his application citing his wife’s deteriorating health. Justice NJ Jamadar, in a single bench, granted him interim bail upon the payment of a surety of Rs 1 lakh. The condition of the bail includes that Goyal must remain within the jurisdiction of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court of Mumbai. The court stated, “The applicant (Goyal) shall be released on interim bail for a period of two months and shall abide by all conditions imposed.”
Harish Salve, representing Naresh Goyal, urged the high court to consider the bail plea based on humanitarian grounds, emphasizing Goyal’s deteriorating health and mental state.
Naresh Goyal, Anita’s husbands’ plea
The Enforcement Directorate, investigating the case against Goyal, initially opposed the bail plea. However, it later stated that it would not object to extending his hospitalization, considering he is also undergoing cancer treatment.
Naresh Goyal, the former promoter of Jet Airways, is embroiled in a trial regarding an alleged Rs 538 crore money laundering case, which stems from a loan fraud complaint by PSU lender Canara Bank. He was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in September 2023. Subsequently, his wife was also arrested two months later following the submission of charges by the ED.
