Buckingham Palace has confirmed that King Charles has been diagnosed with a type of cancer.

While getting treatment for an apparently benign condition, medical investigations uncovered a distinct malignant problem, however the palace’s official statement did not provide exact specifics about the nature and degree of the disease. The King commenced “regular treatments” from Monday (5th February) and would postpone public obligations during that time, according to the Palace.

This event follows his accession to the throne last year, following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

Despite the hard prognosis, the palace underlined the king’s persistent hope and determination to resume full public responsibilities as soon as possible.

King Charles commitment to fulfil his function as the head of state

Although he will suspend his public appearances, the King will continue to fulfil his constitutional function as head of state, which includes paperwork and private meetings.

It is anticipated that his weekly meetings with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak would continue in person, unless physicians urge him to minimise such interaction. There is a constitutional process for when the head of state fails to carry out official duties: “counsellors of state” may be appointed to fill in for the king.

Currently, that comprises Queen Camilla, the Princess Royal, Prince William and Prince Edward. Prince Harry as well as the Duke of York are not currently desired because they are both non-working royals.

Prince William had also briefly retreated from public appearances to assist his wife Catherine, the Princess of Wales, in recovering from stomach surgery performed last month. However, it was reported earlier on Monday (5th February) that he will return to public activities later this week.
