The business said that social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, will establish a moderation office in Texas with a focus on combating information associated with child sexual abuse.
Joe Benarroch, president of business operations at X, told AFP on Saturday that the “Trust and Safety center of excellence” in Austin will initially hire 100 content moderators with the purpose of removing child sexual exploitation (CSE) content and other infractions of the platform’s policies.
“X DOES NOT have a line of business focused on children, but it’s important that we make these investments to keep stopping offenders from using our platform for ANY distribution or engagement with CSE content,” Benarroch said in his email.
X focuses on child centered Company
According to a blog post published on Friday, the business that Elon Musk acquired at the end of 2022 was “determined to make X inhospitable for actors who seek to exploit minors.”
“X has addressed CSE by stepping up its enforcement and rules. We are currently pursuing legal action against the people who disseminate this information as well as swift action against the user networks that support this abhorrent content.”
Children under 13 are not allowed to create profiles on X, and users between the ages of 13 and 17 are immediately set to private and are not subject to ad targeting, according to Benarroch. X’s statement coincides with the US Senate’s hearing on “Big Tech and the Online Child Sexual Exploitation Crisis,” which is scheduled for this Wednesday.
Leading figures from X, Snap, TikTok, Discord, Meta, and Snap will give testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee. CEO Linda Yaccarino will speak on behalf of X. After purchasing Twitter, Musk, a self-described “free speech absolutist,” promised to lift the platform’s limitations. Several restrictions were lifted or eased, allowing many individuals who had been forbidden to return.
Following the identification of potentially suspicious tweets pertaining to Hamas’ October 7 attack in Israel, the EU last month initiated “formal infringement proceedings” against X under a statute intended to combat misinformation and hatred.
Since Brussels enacted the Digital Services Act (DSA), a comprehensive piece of EU law that reinforces online corporations’ responsibilities for content moderation, this was the first action taken against a major online platform.
What are the Child Pornography Laws in US?
Any “visual depiction” of a juvenile participating in “sexually explicit conduct” is considered child pornography. In essence, a photograph, video, or digital image is a visual portrayal. Anyone younger than eighteen is considered a minor. A range of sexual behaviors are classified as “sexually explicit conduct,” such as masturbating, having sex, and “lascivious exhibition of the genitalia or pubic area” of any individual. If being nude is suggestive of a sexual nature, it may qualify as “sexually explicit conduct.”
Federal law prohibits the creation, dissemination, acquisition, and possession of any child pornography. Federal law also forbids intentionally looking for and viewing child pornography, even if the pictures are later removed or destroyed.
If found guilty of a federal child pornography charge, you may face a lengthy jail sentence. If found guilty of intentionally having child pornography, a person may face a term of up to 10 years in jail, or up to 20 years if the juvenile in question is younger than twelve.
In addition to fines and restitution payments that are frequently required to any identifiable victim of the offense, a person found guilty of distributing or receiving child pornography faces a sentence of five to twenty years in prison (of course, the sentences can be significantly increased for a person with a prior conviction). Conviction of a child pornography offense in federal court also entails registration as a sex offender.
