The fourth edition of the Khelo India Winter Games Festival is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, February 21, 2024. The sporting spectacular will take place at Gulmarg, Jammu & Kashmir. Athletes from around the country will compete in various winter sports during the event, including snowboarding, snow mountaineering, Nordic skiing, and Alpine skiing.
This is the 2nd phase of the Winter Games after the first phase was completed at the start of the month.
The Department of Youth Services & Sports, J&K Sports Council, is organizing the Khelo India Winter Games 2024 event in partnership with the Tourism Department, Gulmarg Development Authority, and some other stakeholders. The first part of the Khelo India Winter Activities Festival 2024 took place in Leh from February 2 to 6, featuring activities like Ice Hockey and Ice Skating.
Baramulla and Gulmarg have transformed into a gorgeous wonderland with exquisite layers of fluffy snow owing to the recent spell of heavy snowfall. The present period of rainy weather has made it perfect for holding games.
Events, Dates, and Mascot of Khelo India Winter Games
Athletes from many states will compete in these Winter Games. Winter sports include snowboarding, alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, and snow mountaineering. Twenty states and union territories will compete in alpine skiing, nordic skiing, and snowboarding, while ten states will compete in ski mountaineering.
Due to a dry winter and parched circumstances in Gulmarg, the first portion of the games, which included two ice sports events – ice hockey and ice skating – began in Leh on February 2.
The Department of Youth Services and Sports and the Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council are organizing the event in partnership with the Tourism Department, the Gulmarg Development Authority, and other stakeholders. The event is planned to begin on February 21 and end on February 25.
The Khelo India Winter Games 2024 mascot is a snow leopard, which is intended to promote awareness about problems like natural environment preservation, animal conservation, and indigenous tribes’ worries about mountain development.
What does the Secretary of Youth Services and Sports of J&K say?
Sarmad Hafeez, Secretary of Youth Services and Sports in Jammu and Kashmir, conducted a review meeting on February 18 to assess preparations for the event. He went on to say, “Gulmarg has the potential to become a world-class winter sports destination and no stone should be left unturned to make the event a grand success.”
While underlining that the Khelo India Winter Games serve as a platform to exhibit the beauty of Jammu and Kashmir, Sarmad Hafeez stated, “The place has one of the finest slopes and the best quality snow, otherwise also known to skiers who travel from other parts of the world.”
