India defeated Afghanistan in the third T20I at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru following two exciting super overs on Wednesday. The third and final T20I between India and Afghanistan was more than simply a run-fest.
Rohit Sharma (121; 69b, 11×4, 8×6) and Rinku Singh (69; 39b, 2×4, 6×6) both contributed to India’s 212/4 score. Chasing 212, Afghanistan also finished with the same score. The chase was a respectable total, but anything is conceivable at a batting-friendly environment.
Despite being behind 0-2 in the three-match series, the visitors came out firing. Rahmanullah Gurbaz (50; 32b, 3×4, 4×6), Ibrahim Zadran (50, 41b, 4×4, 1×6), and Gulbadin Naib (55; 23b, 4×4, 4×6) all contributed to the Afghans’ Super Over victory. India finally won the match in the second Super Over, clinching the series without a hitch.
Afghanistan deserves credit for coming close to winning the competition. Gurbaz and skipper Zadran set the tone with a 93-run opening wicket partnership. A fantastic cameo by Moahammad Nabi (34; 16, 2×4, 3×6) set the stage for Naib to deliver one of his greatest performances. He hammered Indian bowlers who bowled within his arc and scored boundaries at will. With 19 runs needed in the last over, Afghanistan managed to smash 18 and force the game into a Super Over.
Afghanistan scored 16 runs in the first Super Over, which India matched, bringing the tie to the second Super Over. In the second shootout, the Men in Blue were eliminated for 11 runs. Ravi Bishnoi successfully removed both Afghan batsmen in three deliveries.
Earlier, Rohit, who went out for a duck in the first two games, returned to form with a century. The two, with Rinku for company, had an undefeated 190-run collaboration, India’s highest-ever T201 partnership.
However, this was not your average ‘Hitman’ inning. There were several hits and misses on the first powerplay, a phase in which he often capitalises. Fareed Ahmad took three wickets, including Virat Kohli for a golden duck, in the powerplay, leading the home team to 22/4 in five overs.
What are the Double Super over rules?
In one of the most dramatic T20I endings of all time, the winner was decided by a double Super Over for the first time in international cricket history. Despite both sides reaching 212 in their allocated 20 overs, plus 16 extra in the first Super Over of the game, there was no difference between the two teams. To break the deadlock, a second Super Over was called for, and despite a spectacular and rather controversial turn of events.
The same bowler cannot bowl the second Super Over
A bowler who bowled the first Super Over is ineligible to run the second time around, which is why neither Azmatullah Omarzai nor Mukesh Kumar were handed the ball in the second Super Over. Both quicks bowled out of their skins to yield 16 runs – a large total, but adequate in the circumstances of a decider.
What’s with the batting switch?
The side that bats first must bat second the next time around. The same rules apply to the second Super Over as they do to any other. A team that bats second in the scheduled 20 overs and ties the match must bat first in the Super Over, which is why Afghanistan batted first after matching India’s 212/4 with 212/6 of their own.
The bowler can’t bowl, but the batter can bat?
It totallt depends. According to MCC rules, a batsman who gets dismissed in the first Super Over is not eligible to bat in the second. Before the Super Over begins, both sides complete their batter lineups. If a batsman was scheduled for the first Super Over but did not bat or was not dismissed, he is still eligible to bat in the second Super Over. Similarly, if he or she retires due to injury, the athlete is permitted to play again.
What if the second Super Over is also a tie?
In the case of this super over will enter third super over and will go on and on till the winner is decided through it. Including yesterday night’s game, a match has been decided in a Double Super Over twice, the first occurrence being the IPL 2020 encounter between Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings.
